Kyanite, the name of which derives from the Greek word 'kyanos' meaning 'dark blue', is renowned for its rich hue. It is a relatively rare aluminum silicate mineral and, being challenging to cut, it is more costly. 

As a semi-precious gemstone it is best known as a deep sapphire colour, an aquamarine, blue topaz or a transparent blue. It can also occur in various colours due to trace impurities brown, orange, black, shades of grey and, less commonly, blue-green and colourless. It is common for stones to have a 'scratchy' appearance even after being polished or it may have other minor surface imperfections

Because of its hardness; heat-resisting properties; high melting point and good thermal conductivity, Kyanite is useful in industry.

Kyanite is said to have exceptional healing properties, be a soothing stone, and to promote "emotional healing, spiritual growth and overall well-being".
