A variety of quartz used as a gemstone by the ancient Egyptians it is known for its range of purple and violet hues and symbolizes peace, clarity and calm. Its name comes from the Greek 'amethystos,' meaning "not intoxicated," reflecting ancient beliefs in its power to ward off drunkenness.
